Apprenticeship Ambassador Q&A - Martin Fearon

Please introduce yourself and your company

My name’s Martin Fearon. I’m the Chief Executive Officer of Accrington Stanley Community Trust. We’re overseeing and delivering over 30 community projects to more than 20,000 people every year.

How many employees do you have and what’s your turnover?

We’ve got 15 full time employees, 12 part time and 12 kickstart employees. We’re going to be a £1 million plus turnover business moving forward in the future.

What sector is your business in?

We’re in the voluntary sector. We’re a registered charity and we’ve been operating in Hyndburn since 2010.

What do you deliver in the community?

We’ve got four different key themes. That’s sport participation, education, health and inclusion. All our 30 projects fit into those areas. We do sport coaching in schools and college courses in education. We work with disabled children, and adults and we also work with the elderly and the lonely.

Tell me about the history of your charity and how it started.

We originally started in 2007 as a department of Accrington Stanley Football Club delivering coaching and getting people involved in sport. We advanced to become an independent registered charity in 2010.

What different careers can be achieved for young people in your charity?

There are a variety of different roles within our charity. We’ve got sports coaching, youth workers, education tutors, site maintenance, marketing and also leisure attendance at our new £2million sports facility.

What jobs are currently available and how can people apply?

Currently we’ve got sports coaching vacancies, and some summer vacancies for our next programme.

We got involved with the government’s Kickstart scheme a few months ago and we’ve initially taken on 12 young people from the local area. They’ll be working 25 hours a week for the next six months. We’ve also committed to another cohort of 12 which we’ll be recruiting around September.

For anyone interested in applying, the first place to look is our website www.stanleytrust.co.uk. We’re also active on social media (@stanleyFCtrust). If we’ve got a vacancy, we’ll promote it on there and we’ll also link in with Amazing Accrington.
