Apprenticeship Ambassador Q&A - Tony Grimshaw OBE

Please introduce yourself and your company.

I’m Tony Grimshaw, Company Director at What More UK.

What More is the UK’s leading manufacturers of plastic and metal housewares. Our brand Wham is sold in all the major UK supermarkets, DIY shops, and a further 1600 independent retailers in the UK.

Tell me a little about your role.

I’m one of the Directors here at What More. My job has been to support sales throughout the world and promote the values of our company in press and media relations.

How many employees do you have and what’s your turnover?

We’ve got circa 350 people working here at What More. Together we manage a turnover of more than £50 million.

What sector is your business in?

We’re a plastic housewares manufacturer. We make plastic storage, around the sink items, laundry and plastic gardenware. We also make bakeware and cookware. We manufacture it all, very proudly, here in Lancashire.

Do you export or operate in different countries?

This is one of our great success stories. We export to 75 countries around the world. This year we added Sri Lanka and Costa Rica to our export destinations. We also source and buy products from other countries in Europe.

Tell me about the history of your company.

What More started out in 1999 with 15 products. In our first year we had a turnover of £4 million. We started exporting and we’ve been growing consistently ever since.

What different careers can be achieved for young people within your company?

We’ve got careers in finance, HR, warehousing, sales and marketing, and of course engineering and manufacturing. Many of our apprentices start off in the tool room and from there they can go to any area of the company.

All of our company directors have been promoted up from within. If you come to us with the right attitude and a willingness to learn, you can go all the way to the top.

What jobs are currently available and how do people apply?

We’re looking for the young people interested in engineering and manufacturing. Anyone wanting to find out more should get in touch with our HR department using the contact us page of our website www.whatmoreuk.com/contact/for more information about the apprenticeship scheme.

Applications should be made via the government’s Find an Apprenticeship scheme, click here to visit the page.
