Year 7 students at Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School showcased their pride in their hometown on Friday, 18th July, with a series of vibrant and engaging presentations as part of a special event centred around the theme #AmazingAccrington.

The event saw students deliver creative and passionate presentations highlighting what they love most about Accrington – from local landmarks such as Accrington Stanley Football Club, The Coppice, and Haworth Art Gallery, to their favourite places to shop, visit, eat and spend time with friends, including Accrington Market.

Special guest Murray Dawson, Chair of #AmazingAccrington, joined Deputy Headteacher Caroline Farrelly on the judging panel to assess the quality, creativity and delivery of the presentations.

The students, led by Miss Ellie Cruse, Assistant Curriculum Lead for English, had worked diligently on the project in the weeks leading up to the event, exploring the many reasons they are proud to live in Accrington and nominating members of their class to present on the day.

While all groups delivered outstanding presentations, the winning team of Georgia, Heidi and Johnny stood out with their well-researched and confidently delivered project, earning them special #AmazingAccrington goodie bags including some Accrington Stanley goodies, shopping vouchers, pads, pens and sweets.

In addition, Amazon vouchers donated by #AmazingAccrington were presented to Charley-Anne, Scott and Sienna for their exceptional presentations, with all those taking part receiving a sweet treat.

Following the presentations, Mr Dawson spoke to the students about his own journey growing up in Accrington and his experience as a local business owner, offering valuable insights and inspiration.

Murray Dawson, Chair of #AmazingAccrington and owner of Scott Dawson Advertising and Peter Scott Printers, said: “I was incredibly impressed by the passion, energy and creativity shown in the presentations. It’s inspiring to see young people speak so positively about where they live, and their ideas and confidence truly reflect what makes Accrington amazing.

“I also learned about what is special to them and the presentations touched on women’s football, outdoor areas such as the coppice, where they like to go, Accrington Market and Haworth Art Gallery. Creating a sense of place and pride is important and I applaud Mount Carmel for this initiative.”

Deputy Headteacher at Mount Carmel, Caroline Farrelly, said: “The students spoke about all the wonderful things that we’ve got here on our doorstep in Accrington, whilst they have been honing their speaking and listening skills and practising their persuasive language.

“These pupils come from this area and they’re really proud of what we have got here.”
