Students from all 36 Hyndburn Primary schools are again invited to sing at the annual Accrington Christmas Light Switch On by event organisers Amazing Accrington, building on last year’s post-COVID success.

The Hyndburn primary school’s ‘Christmas Carols’ will take place as part of the event from 4.30 pm-4.55 pm on Thursday 24th November and will be led by Helen Davies, Director of Music at St Christopher’s C.E. High School.

Participating schools will perform three short Christmas songs on the night, as they take centre stage in Accrington Town Centre.

The songs being performed will be suitable for Year 4 students and above, with music to be sent out to learn the short and very easy tracks once schools confirm their attendance.

Letters will be sent out to head teachers of 36 primary schools in Hyndburn and the surrounding areas by Murray Dawson, chair of event organisers Amazing Accrington on Wednesday 12th October.

Hyndburn primary schools looking to get involved in the event, sponsored by Hyndburn Borough Council, Sundown Solutions, North Lancs Training Group (NLTG) and the Nelson and Colne College Group, should contact sixthformdirector@st-christophers.org or zahida@scottdawson.co.uk by Thursday 20th October.

Miss Davies said: “I am honoured to have been asked to lead the school choir once again this year, following a fabulous spectacle in 2021 where it was fantastic to see all the families and children enjoying themselves, it really made it a family event.

“It gives our young people the opportunity to be an integral part of a wonderful local event and I can’t wait to see everyone down there.

Mr Dawson commented: “The collective school choir is a magical spectacle and one which we are delighted to be bringing back to Accrington in 2022. We would encourage all our local Primary schools to register their interest as soon as possible for what is going to be another amazing evening of fun, laughter and community spirit.

“Here at #AmazingAccrington we work in collaboration with our local schools, meeting headteachers at our Education Summit, hosting an annual Futures Event and taking local businesses into schools around Hyndburn. The collective school choir at the Accrington Christmas Light Switch On gives our young people the chance to give some something back to the town and support the #AmazingAccrington initiative.”

Miles Parkinson OBE, Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council, said: “The #AmazingAccrington initiative brings the community, business leaders, schools and shopkeepers all together and this will be another fabulous event for our town.”

Sara Britcliffe, MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden, commented: “We have so many wonderful schools here in Hyndburn and we would like to thank St Christophers for orchestrating this fantastic event again. This one is always on the calendar and with over 300 children taking part last year, we are looking to build on that even more in 2022 with the 36 Primary schools.”

The 2022 Christmas Light Switch On will kick start a family-friendly start to Christmas in Accrington including a music stage, live acts, interactive entertainment, a firework display and fairground rides.
